New to Dynasty Warriors Online? Start here. This guide walks you from the launcher to your first wins: making your character, the tutorial, fighting, upgrading your weapon, gear, items, money and everything in between. It describes the game as it runs on DWO Reborn today (game version 0.1.0.3, English patch).
DWO Reborn is a fan-run revival of the game, rebuilt from the last Japanese version of the game with an English patch. This guide describes the game exactly as it plays on DWO Reborn.
Start here: your first hour in 12 steps

Make an account and get access
Create an account on the website. The download currently needs the Tester rank or above.

Unpack the launcher, install DirectX 9, sign in, and let it patch the game to version 0.1.0.3.

Create your character
Your name and origin can never be changed; your looks can. Pick the faction your friends play: Dong Zhuo or Yuan Shao.

Pass the combat drills
The first tutorial battle asks for each charge attack, C1 to C4, then a Musou. It pays your first 2,000 gold.

Temper your Spear
Visit the Blacksmith in the Market and temper your starter Spear once. Tempering is what gives your flask ring its stars.

Serve a general
In the Courtyard, talk to a general and choose Serve. He pays your salary and gives you the Musou Board.

Learn the flask ring
In the bandit battle, pick up the flasks enemies drop and press I to spend them. This is the most important system in the game.

Finish the tutorial
Collect your promotion to Guard and the Dark Hero outfit, report to the Melee Receptionist, and meet the Beautician. Battles against other players are now open.

Set up your controls

Learn to guard and charge-block
Hold U to block; hold U and press K to charge-block, which throws attackers back. It is the key to surviving fights against other players.

Play a quest, then Quick Mock
An E-rank quest teaches the battlefield without other players; Quick Mock is your first real PvP, against your own faction.

Upgrade your weapon
Spend your gems and gold on tempering, and buy the Blacksmith's weekly Rank 3 weapon when you can afford it.
